Septic System Plumbing
Island properties run on septic — and septic problems need to be handled before they become health and environmental issues.
Signs your septic system needs attention
Don't wait for a complete backup. Call a plumber if you notice:
- ⚠️ Slow drains throughout the house
- ⚠️ Wet, mushy spots in the yard
- ⚠️ Unpleasant odours near the tank
- ⚠️ Gurgling sounds in the plumbing
The Island Context
Terrain & Soil: Denman and Hornby's soil types significantly affect drain field performance. Slope, bedrock proximity, and distance to the ocean or seasonal watercourses dictate what type of system can be installed or repaired.
Regulations: All septic systems in BC fall under the oversight of the Interior Health Authority. When doing major repairs or installations, island plumbers ensure compliance with provincial regulations to protect the fragile island ecosystem.
Real Estate Inspections: Septic inspections are increasingly required for real estate transactions on the islands. We connect you with professionals qualified to assess system health.
Pump-out Scheduling
Note: Septic pump-out is typically a separate service from plumbing repair. However, if your system is backed up, a plumber can diagnose whether the issue is a blocked line (which they can fix) or a full tank (which requires a vacuum truck).
What NOT to flush
Educate your guests and renters. Never flush:
- "Flushable" wipes (they aren't)
- Grease, fats, or oils
- Feminine hygiene products
- Harsh chemicals or bleach
