Propane vs. Electric Water Heater on an Island Property โ What to Choose
When it's time to replace your hot water heater on Denman or Hornby, you have to consider island-specific realities. Most properties use either an electric tank or a propane system.
Propane Water Heaters
Propane is very common on the Gulf Islands because it doesn't rely on BC Hydro.
- Pros: You still have hot water during winter power outages. Propane tankless (on-demand) systems are excellent for seasonal cabins because you only heat water when you need it, and they are easier to winterize.
- Cons: Requires regular fuel delivery from mainland providers. Installation requires both a plumber and a certified gas fitter.

Request a Plumber โElectric Water Heaters
Standard electric tanks are the traditional choice.
- Pros: Simpler, cheaper installation. No need to schedule fuel deliveries.
- Cons: When the power goes out in a November windstorm, your hot water supply is limited to whatever is left in the tank. If the tank is located in an unheated space, keeping that water hot costs a lot of electricity.
Tankless Systems
If you are renovating, consider a propane tankless water heater. They save space, don't keep 40 gallons of water hot while you aren't at the cabin, and eliminate the risk of a rusted tank flooding your floor.
