Winterizing Your Denman Island Property โ Plumbing Checklist
The most common calls plumbers receive in the spring are from island property owners who didn't properly drain their seasonal cabins in the fall. Winter freeze-ups will destroy pipes, water heaters, and fixtures.
The Essential Checklist
- Shut off the main power: Turn off the breaker to the well pump and the electric water heater. (Never drain a water heater while it has power!)
- Shut off the main water valve: Isolate the house from the well.
- Open all faucets: Open every tap in the house (hot and cold), including outdoor hose bibs.
- Drain the lowest point: Find the lowest valve in the plumbing system and let all the water drain out.
- Drain the water heater: Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and run it outside.
- Winterize traps: Pour RV plumbing antifreeze (non-toxic) into every sink trap, shower drain, and toilet bowl.

Request a Plumber โHeat Tape
For year-round residents with exposed pipes in crawlspaces, heat tape (a thermostatically controlled heating cable wrapped around pipes) is essential. Ensure it is plugged in and functioning before the first hard freeze.
